Last week, a new survey was published in Israel. A great percentage of the Israeli population hates haredim. On certain non - Israeli websites I read the mistranslation that the orthodox are being hated.
Being orthodox does not automatically mean being haredi. I consider myself as orthodox but not as haredi. You can keep kosher, go to an orthodox synagogue etc. and you are orthodox. But being haredi means something more than this.

Why does Israeli society hate haredim ? And who exactly is the Israeli society ? In last week's edition of the haredi paper HaShavua (The Week), haredi politicians tried to analyze the reason for the hatred and did a kind of cheshbon nefesh (self-examination). One of the main problems is that the haredim do have a more than negative image in the Israeli press. The problem did not only occur after the murder of former prime minister Itzchak Rabin. Many non - religious Israelis simply see the haredim as parasites. They do not go to the army, do not work but only demand more and more money from the government. They dress funny and live in their ghettos. The former Shinui - party with its former head Tommy Lapid even increased the hatred by ridiculous statements about religion.

The negative press is only so successful because the Israeli majority hardly knows anything about haredi life. Unfortunately, sometimes also haredim themselves do not know much about the non - religious population.
About 15 years ago, the Israeli journalist Amnon Levy wrote a book about the haredi world and I urge everybody to read his book. Another recommendable author is Naomi Ragen, a haredi woman herself.

The strange thing is that mostly Israelis who have no connection to haredim at all, hate them. It is simply a lack of education. Sometimes, as I said before, on both sides.

The haredi press and haredi politicians on the other hand want to run a campaign in order to explain why they do such and such. Not going to the army does not mean doing nothing. Even in King David's times there was an idea of a spirtual army. Hence, not only fighting physically but also spiritually by prayer and Torah study. The world only exists because of Torah study.

However, some haredim do join the army in their own Nahal - unit. There are haredim who do work and not "only" study in Yeshivot. I could point out all the negative and positive opinions now but instead, I would like to give you one thought: Because of the orthodox and haredim, Judaism is alive.
Every century, Judaism lost a great amount of Jews due to assimilation and the terrible thing of intermarriage, let alone the assimilation of the reform movement. Just have a look at the percentage of people coming from reform families and, later on, intermarry. Generations got and are still getting lost.
Whereas, if you look at orthodox or haredi society, you will only find a very low percentage of assimilation and intermarriage. Thanks to the orthodox and haredim that Judaism and the Jewish people are alive today.

I just wish that the religious and non - religious could find a way to understand each other. Baseless hatred was the reason for the destruction of the Second Temple, and by now, we should have learned from this.




Vergangene Woche wurde in Israel das Ergebnis einer neuen Umfrage veroeffentlicht, wonach ein hoher Prozentanteil der israelischen Bevoelkerung Haredim hasst. Auf einigen nicht - israel. Websites las ich die falsche Uebersetzung, dass die Orthodoxen gehasst werden.
Orthodox sein ist nicht automatisch gleichzusetzen mit Haredi. Ich persoenlich betrachte mich als orthodox, doch keineswegs als Haredi. Viele Juden werden in diesem Punkt mit mir uebereinstimmen. Man kann koscher essen, in eine orthod. Synagoge gehen etc. doch um ein Haredi zu sein, gehoert noch viel mehr dazu.

Warum hasst die israel. Gesellschaft Haredim ? Und wer genau gehoert zu dieser Gesellschaft ?
In der letzten Ausgabe der haredischen Zeitung HaShavua (Die Woche) zogen haredische Politiker Bilanz (cheshbon nefesh) und analysierten die Gruende fuer den Hass. Das Hauptproblem sei die negative Presse, welche die Haredim "geniessen". Das Problem begann nicht erst mit dem Mord an dem fruehren Ministerpraesidenten Itzchak Rabin. Viele nicht - relig. Israelis betrachten die Haredim als Parasiten. Sie gehen nicht zur Armee, arbeiten nicht und verlangen immer mehr Geld von der Regierung. Sie kleiden sich komisch und leben in ihren Ghettos. Die ehemalige Shinui - Partei mit ihrem Ex - Vorsitzenden Tommy Lapid foerderte noch den Hass mit laecherlichen Aussagen ueber Religion und Religioese.
Die negative Presse kann nur so erfolgreich sein, weil die Mehrheit der Israelis keine Ahnung vom Leben der Haredim hat. Leider gilt oft das gleiche auch auf Seiten der Haredim selbst.

Vor ungefaehr 15 Jahren schrieb der israel. Journalist Amnon Levy ein Buch ueber die haredische Welt und ich kann nur jedem dringend raten, dieses Buch zu lesen. Eine weitere empfehlenswerte Autorin ist Naomi Ragen, selbst Haredit.

Das Komische ist, dass gerade diejenigen Israelis Haredim hassen, welche keinerlei Bezug zu ihnen haben. Es herrscht ein Mangel an Aufklaerung und Wissen. Oftmals auf beiden Seiten, was ich vorher schon erwaehnte.

Die haredische Presse sowie Politiker wollen nun eine Kampagne der Aufklaerung starten. Nicht zur Armee gehen heisst nicht gleich untaetig herumzusitzen. Schon zu Zeiten Koenig Davids gab es die Idee der spirituellen Armee. Ergo, es wird nicht nur koerperlich, sondern auch anhand von Gebeten und Thoralernen gekaempft. Die Welt existiert einzig und allein aufgrund vom Thorastudium. Uebrigens gibt es Haredi, die durchaus zur Armee gehen. Diese haben sogar ihre eigene Einheit, die Nahal. Es gibt Haredim, die arbeiten und nicht "nur" in Yeshivot lernen. Ich koennte jetzt saemtliche Punkte auflisten, doch stattdessen will ich auf einen wichtigen Punkt aufmerksam machen:
Durch Haredim und Orhodoxie hat das Judentum bis heute ueberlebt. In jedem Jahrhundert bzw. Jahrzehnt hat das Judentum eine grosse Anzahl von Juden verloren. Sei es aufgrund von Assimilation oder der schrecklichen Tatsache der Ehen zwischen Juden und Nichtjuden, geschweige denn dem Reform Movement. Wer die hohe Anzahl der inter - relig. Ehen, vor allem von Reformjuden sieht, der weiss, was ich meine. Generationen gingen und gehen verloren.

Wogegen in orthodoxen oder haredi Gemeinden der Prozentsatz der Assimilation und der inter - relig. Ehen sehr niedrig liegt. Dank der Haredim und der Orthodoxen existiert das Judentum und das juedische Volk heute und in der Zukunft.

Ich wuerde mir wuenschen, dass Religioese und Nichtreligioese einen Weg zum besseren Verstaendnis finden. Grundloser Hass war die Ursache fuer die Zerstoerung des 2. Tempels und daraus sollten wir lernen.
